The quarterfinals for the Gold Cup were finalized Thursday night as Mexico squeezed by Panama 1-0 and Honduras blasted a disappointing Cuban side 5-0 behind 4 goals from Carlos Pavon. With the goals against Cuba, Pavon becomes only the third player in Gold Cup history to score four times in a match. It is also the first multi-goal game for a catracho at the Gold Cup since Eduardo Bennett’s hat-trick in the 5:1 victory over Panama in the1993 edition.
Carlos Salcido scored off a corner kick in the 60th minute to help Mexico beat Panama 1-0 on Wednesday night before a Gold Cup-high crowd of 68,417 fans in the final round of Group C play. Salcido, who plays for PSV Eindhoven of Holland, was unhappy when he played only the last 5 minutes in Mexico's first Gold Cup game against Cuba, a 2-1 win. He started Wednesday and scored off Jose Andres Guardado's corner kick. With the win, Mexico finishes second in Group C and will move on to face Costa Rica in the next round. With the loss, Panama falls to third place in Group C and will travel to Boston to face the United States.
