The 2009 Gold Cup has released its schedule for this summer. Games will be played across the US with 12 teams from the CONCACAF region fighting it out for the title. The US mens national soccer team has been drawn into Group B for the Gold Cup and will face Grenada, Haiti, Honduras in the opening round. They will open against Grenada in Seattle on July 4th.
Costa Rica was placed in Group A for the Gold Cup and will face Canada, El Salvador, and Jamaica in what is clearly the most difficult of the three groupings. Mexico is in Group C along with Guadeloupe, Nicaragua, and Panama.
Expectations are for the US to field a primarily MLS based squad and to focus the European based players on the Confederations Cup this summer in South Africa for matches with Brazil, Egypt and Italy.
US Gold Cup schedule:
Saturday July 4th USA - Grenada at Seattle, WA
Wednesday, July 8th USA - Honduras at Washington DC
