Gold Cup 2011 quarterfinals set

Published 6/15/2011 12:07:49 PM by William Montero from soccermogul

Gold Cup 2011 quarterfinals set
The quarterfinals are all set for Gold Cup 2011 and there are definitely some surprises in the field.  Mexico have been even better than advertised as they absolutely crushed everyone in Group A rolling to a ridiculous 14-1 goal differential in their dominating three wins.

Mexico will face off against Guatemala Saturday in New York.  Guatemala finished third in Group B with a win, loss and draw.  They are not a bad side, but should provide only token resistance to a Mexico squad with bigger fish to fry.  Chicharito and the offense have been running rampant as they roll up goals in lightning quick fashion.

The other quarterfinal in New York features Costa Rica against Honduras.  This should be a good match as both sides finished second in their respective groups.  Whoever survives this battle will get the task of dealing with Mexico in the semifinals, barring an epic upset.

The remaining two quarterfinal matchups are to be played in Washington DC.  The United States will face a very solid squad from Jamaica that won Group B with three wins.  It will be a difficult test for an American team that needs to step up.  They have been nothing short of disappointing so far losing to Panama and only beating Guadeloupe 1-0.  The finishing must improve or the US could be looking at crashing out in this round.

The other Washington DC quarterfinal has surprising Panama facing El Salvador.  Panama swept to the Group C top spot after their 2-1 upset of the USA.  No doubt they would not relish a semifinal rematch should both progress.  The Americans will be more than motivated for revenge.

Saturday -
Costa Rica - Honduras
Mexico - Guatemala
Sunday -
United States - Jamaica
Panama - El Salvador
