Well this wasn't supposed to happen. The best team in MLS play so far this year obviously weren't too worried about the Puerto Rico Islanders from the USSF D2 pro league, but the Islanders have been giant killers before. They made waves in the CONCACAF Champions League play in 2008 when they advanced all the way to the semifinals before falling in penalty kicks to Cruz Azul.
The lack of focus would cost the LA Galaxy dearly as it was obvious which team had more desire on the night. The Islanders fought for every ball like it was the last while the Galaxy seemed to go through the motions for stretches of the game. The home side were shocked to go down 2-0 at halftime as the Islanders notched goals from David Foley and Nicholas Addlery.
One expected that Bruce Arena would get his squad focused at halftime and the talents of Edson Buddle and Landon Donovan would bring the Galaxy back. Instead it was much of the same in the 2nd half. A feisty Peurto Rico side meeting every LA attack. The next goal would not come from the Galaxy. Instead it was Josh Hansen stretching the Islander lead to 3-0 as the sparse crowd stood amazed at the scoreline.
In the 80th, Puerto Rico would strike again as Eddie Lewis turned a ball over in the midfield and Nicholas Addlery raced off with the ball. Addlery fired a shot to the near post which Galaxy keeper Josh Saunders failed to save and the lead was 4-0 on Addlery's second goal of the night. Only an own goal late on kept the LA Galaxy from being shutout, but the 4-1 scoreline is still shocking. The return leg is next weekend in Puerto Rico where the Galaxy are going to need to make up the three goal deficit.
