The Los Angeles Galaxy rallied from a 2-2 deficit to earn a draw in Vancouver Wednesday night. David Beckham and 17 year old substitute Jose Villarreal provided the second half goals in the rally.
The Vancouver Whitecaps had jumped out to a 2-0 halftime lead to the delight of a sellout crowd. Goals from Gershon Koffie and Barry Robson led the home side to a 2-0 lead within half an hour. Frustrations grew for the Galaxy who were visibly rattled. But they were to regroup at the halftime break and play much better in the second half.
The Galaxy pressed in an attempt to get back into the match. Their efforts did not pay off in any early chances after the break. In fact, Vancouver could have put the match away in the 70th but Koffie saw his shot come back off the crossbar.
Only a minute later, the Galaxy had their lifeline as David Beckham fired in a rebound from the top of the penalty area. The rally was on.
The tying goal would come in the 87th. Beckham started the play that set up L.A.'s tying goal in the 87th minute when he lobbed a lead ball to Juninho, who then tapped the ball on to Villarreal. The youngster made no mistake, cutting and curling home high into the corner.
The draw keeps Vancouver four points ahead of Los Angeles for 5th place in the Western Conference. Consider it an opportunity lost for the Whitecaps as they had a real chance to put some major distance between themselves and the Galaxy.
