Freddy Adu made two appearances last week with Portugese giants Benfica and recorded a goal in both matches. He also became the youngest American UEFA Champions League proper. Freddy notched his first league goal on Sunday after he entered the game as an 80th minute substitute. Benfica was playing with only 10 men due to an ejection and the score was tied 1-1. Adu tapped in a cross from the Brazilian defender Leo to give Benfica a 2-1 win over Maritimo and move it into second place.
The young American is getting a reputation as a saviour off the bench as he has recently scored 3 goals that were all game winners for Benfica after entering as a substitute.
Last Wednesday, Adu came on in the 61st minute of Benfica's 1-0 win over Scottish champion Celtic in their Group D match on Wednesday. At 18 years, 4 months, Adu broke the record for the youngest American to play in the Champions League held by Jonathan Spector (18 years, 11 months) set when he came on as a sub for Manchester United against Turkey's Fenerbahce in 2004.
