Monaco have signed Freddy Adu from Benfica with a view to a permanent move, the Portuguese side confirmed on Monday. The United States international has so far struggled at times to live up to the promise he showed as a youngster, which saw him make his professional debut in Major League Soccer at the age of just 14.
Adu, age 19, made 11 appearances for the team after joining Benfica last year, but has been named in the US squad for this summer's Olympics. He scored five goals in 21 appearances as the team finished fifth in the league. The squad also suffered through a tumultuous season in which it had three different coaches. Freddy Adu looks to also be in the plans for the full national squad as the team begins group qualifying play for the 2010 South Africa World Cup.
