New boys Burnley continue their surprising start as they knocked off a disappointing Everton side 1-0 Sunday in English Premier League play. Just when you thought things couldn't get worse for Everton. Last weekend they opened EPL play with a resounding thud getting thumped at home 6-1 by Arsenal. Now they turn around and lose to minnows Burnley and drift to the very bottom of the EPL standings. At least they were able to win a midweek Europa League match with Sigma Olomouc, but I think most Everton fans would trade that for Premier League success.
Burnley are clearly the early surprise of the league. Knocking off Manchester United in midweek they are going to be a concern for visiting teams at the very least this year. Burnley once again started quickly putting Everton on the back foot right off. The work finally paid off in the 34th when Wade Elliott found some space and nicely picked out the right corner for the goal.
Everton pushed forward in the 2nd half generating plenty of attempts at goal. Unfortunately out of 25 shots Everton fired on the night only one was actually on frame. A pitiful shooting performance to say the least. In the 75th minute Everton would get their big chance on the night. Referee Phil Dowd awarded a phantom penalty even though replays showed Tony Hibbert went to ground untouched.
Up stepped Louis Saha and he continued the display of poor accuracy on the evening as he slid his penalty kick wide left of the goal and Burnley would go on to victory putting them on a perfect six points from two matches.
