In stunning fashion, Turkey fought back from a 2-0 deficit to leave the Czech Republic out of the quarterfinals and in tears with a pair of goals in the last five minutes in a European match for the ages. In the other Group A match, Switzerland defeated group winners Portugal as the Portugese rested several front line players before quarterfinal action.
Turkey 3 Czech Republic 2
Turkey will face Croatia in the quarterfinals of Euro 2008 after a stunning 3-2 victory over the Czech Republic. The Turks trailed 2-0 with 15 minutes to go after Jan Koller and Jaroslav Plasil had scored for the Czechs. Turkey threw everything they had forward in attempt to salvage the match. Arda Turan pulled one back in the 75th minute and there was hope for the red. It looked for noght after a set piece header from the six was put wide, but in the 87th minute a massive mistake by Peter Cech gifted Turkey the equalizer. Nihat Kahveci pushed home the Peter Cech fumbleand all was level. The match seemed destined for penalties until Nihat Kahveci got in behind the defense and produced a stunning winner off the crossbar and down into the net. Turkey then had keeper Volkan Demirel sent off meaning Tuncay went in goal but they held on for the incredible win. Clearly a European Championships match that will go down as one of the best ever.
Switzerland 2 Portugal 0
Switzerland notched their first win at a European Championship finals when it least mattered by beating a second-string side from Euro 2008 quarter-finalists Portugal 2-0 on Sunday. Hakan Yakin scored both goals, firing home in the 71st minute when he was set up by fellow striker Eren Derdiyok and then converting an 83rd minute penalty. The commitment showed by Portugal's reserves, looking to win a place in Luiz Felipe Scolari's first team, and the eliminated Swiss belied the fact that the result would not alter the Group A standings.
