Euro 2008 - Day 5 Portugal takes control of Group A

Euro 2008 - Day 5 Portugal takes control of Group A

Day 5 of the European Championships saw Portugal take charge of Group A with a resounding 3-1 win over Czech Republic while Turkey erased a halftime deficit and beat Switzerland 2-1 on an injury time winner.

Portugal 3  Czech Republic 1
Cristiano Ronaldo
scored one and set up the others as Portugal beat Czech Republic 3-1 in Group A to edge towards the last eight of Euro 2008.  Deco put the Portuguese ahead early on in Geneve but Libor Sionko equalised within nine minutes and the game looked to be heading towards a draw until Ronaldo produced a typical moment of magic to put his side back ahead just after the hour.  Sionko really should have earned the Czechs a draw six minutes from time but he failed to get any real direction on his header and Ricardo was easily able to tip his tame effort over the bar. Czech Republic poured forward in the dying moments but they were a dealt a sucker punch in the first minute of extra time when a long punt upfield released Ronaldo, who closed on Cech and simply squared for Quaresma to slide home into an empty net.

Turkey 2  Switzerland 1
Turkey's Arda Turan stunned Switzerland with an injury time goal at a rain soaked St Jakob-Park Stadium on Wednesday to knock the Euro 2008 cohosts out of the tournament.  Hakan Yakin opened the scoring for Switzerland in the 32nd minute but substitute Semih Senturk's equaliser shortly before the hour mark left both teams searching for their first win in Group A and in the bottom two places of the group.  Just as the game looked to be headed for a draw, Arda struck from the edge of the area.  His right footed effort deflected off a Swiss defender and into the goal to silence the home crowd.
