US National Soccer Team forward Charlie Davies was severely injured in a single car wreck outside Washington DC. He was in surgery for five hours and is in stable condition with a broken tibia and femur as well as internal injuries. The injuries are not deemed life threatening currently, but a US National Team spokesman stated the injuries are definitely career threatening.
Charlie Davies is in town with the US team scheduled to face Costa Rica on Wednesday evening. He and three others were travelling on George Washington Parkway in an SUV. The SUV struck the railing along the Parkway and was basically cut in half. One passenger, a 22yr old woman, died at the scene while Davies and the other two passengers were taken to local hospitals. At the time of the accident it was unknown who was driving the SUV. The cause is also still under investigation.
The 23-year-old Davies is a starter for the national team and plays for the French club Sochaux. He played for Boston College before signing with Swedish team Hammarby in 2007. He was expected to be a major part of the American swuad which has just qualified for the World Cup next summer in South Africa.
