Wind, wind and more wind was the name of the game on Monday at Dallas Cup XXX. A consistent 30mph north wind dictated every match throughtout the day. Tuesday will be an off day for the Super Group squads and Wednesday will be the last day of group matches before semifinals on Friday.
Group A -
Manchester City found out very quickly that Tigres would not be the pushovers that AC Milan were the night before. Tigres had the strong wind at their backs first and took less than 10 minutes to cash in. Manchester City had trouble maintaining possession against a quick Tigres side and the strong wind. They scored again in the 30th minute and took a 2-0 lead to halftime. The 2nd half was much much different as Manchester City adopted the route 1 soccer strategy and played direct the whole half. It was quickly obvious that Tigres would not be able to hold up and Manchester City got one back within the first 10 minutes of play. They tied the game and got the winner in the 80th minute on a Kieran Trippier free kick for the 3-2 victory. In the other Group A match, AC Milan continued their terrible display by getting smashed by Toronto FC 3-0. AC Milan has been eliminated after only two matches in very dissapointing fashion. Manchester City and Toronto FC will meet Wednesday for the group title with Man City only needing a draw.
Manchester City 6, Toronto FC 4, Tigres 1, AC Milan 0
Group B --
Sao Paolo of Brazil continued to show their class after Sunday's easy victory as they defeated a feisty Urawa Red Diamond squad from Japan 1-0. Eintracht Frankfurt set up a Wednesday showdown as they took care of an outclassed Dallas Texans side 5-1. Frankfurt leads the group on differential heading into Wednesday's showdown with Sao Paolo.
Eintracht Frankfurt 6, Sao Paolo 6, Urawa Red Diamonds 0, Dallas Texans 0
Group C --
The Vancouver Whitecaps continued their solid play and look to be the darkhorse of the tourney as they defeated River Plate 2-1 to lead the group. Andromeda rallied with two 2nd half goals to defeat CF Monterrey 2-1. The winning goal came from Dillon Powers with 10 minutes to play. Andromeda plays Vancouver on Wednesday and can win the group with a win.
Vancouver Whitecaps 6, Andromeda 4, River Plate 1, CF Monterrey 0
