Dallas Cup XXXI Super Group bracket play has concluded and the semifinals are all set for Friday evening at Pizza Hut Park. We had to wait for the feature game of the night to get the brackets finalized though, but it was well worth the wait to decide the Bracket B winner. Both Cruzeiro of Brazil and Chivas of Mexico came into the final game both on six points from two wins. Chivas held the tie breaker and thus would advance in the case of a draw. When Chivas scored early on things looked dire for the Brazilians who then needed two goals.
A freekick drew Cruzeiro even at 1-1, but the Chivas goalkeeper put on quite the display making several ridiculous saves to keep the game tied. It looked as if Chivas would hang on as the match progressed several minutes into extra time. Then at the last gasp, a 60 yard long ball from the Brazilian keeper was flicked into the Chivas penalty area where Gabriel Carvalho of Cruzeiro spun and hit a side volley that found the side netting for the winner. Thirty seconds later the match was over and Cruzeiro celebrated a stunning victory.
There was no such drama in Bracket D as the Mexico 91/92 national side closed out their third win by defeating the Vancouver Whitecaps 1-0. Eintracht Frankfurt took 2nd in the group after beating the USA 91/92 national side 1-0.
England side Tottenham Hotspurs claimed Bracket C thanks to their 2-0 win over Tigres of Mexico. The Japan 91/92 national team had a chance to win the group but fell to Dallas Texans 3-2. In Bracket A, Chelsea defeated CF Monterrey 1-0 leaving the two tied on 6 points from group play. CF Monterrey advanced with a single goal better differential though.
The semifinals are set for Friday as follows:
CF Monterrey - Mexico 91//92 national team
Cruzeiro of Brazil - Tottenham Hotspurs of England
