A huge week lies ahead in CONCACAF qualifying for World Cup 2010. Each team plays a pair of games over the next week and the results will go a long way to deciding who gets the three berths to South Africa. The group is tightly bunched with only four matches left to play.
Costa Rica 12
Honduras 10
USA 10
Mexico 9
Only three of the four will get automatic spots in the World Cup. The fourth will face a very difficult home and home with the fifth place South American side for a spot. Any slipup will be costly.
Mexico faces a daunting trip to Costa Rica on the weekend and could find themselves in a bad spot with a loss. Costa Rica, on the other hand could pretty much assure themselves a spot with a home win. The US hosts El Salvador Saturday in a must win match. Nothing but a win will suffice. The US then turns around and travels to Trinidad for the midweek game. Grab the six points from the two games and the Americans will be looking good for South Africa.
Honduras hosts Trinidad on the weekend before turning around and having to play Mexico in Azteca midweek. Three points is a must against Trinidad as the Mexico trip is a loss.
Saturday games -
USA - El Salvador
Costa Rica - Mexico
Honduras - Trinidad
Wednesday games -
Trindad - USA
Mexico - Honduras
El Salvador - Costa Rica
