The Columbus Crew completed a magical season yesterday when they defeated the New York Red Bulls 3-1 in the 2008 MLS Cup in California. Columbus captured the Supporters Shield with the best regular season MLS record.
Guillermo Barros Schelotto, just three days after collecting the league MVP award, provided three assists in helping the Crew claim their first league title with a 3-1 win over the New York Red Bulls. By doing so, the Crew scored one for the traditionalists, who enjoy seeing season-long performance rewarded.
The Red Bulls came out fast in the final, but the Crew stood their ground and eventually gained their composure. The better side definitely won the match, but credit to New York for giving a good account of themselves.
Coach Sigi Schmid's Crew had been consistent the season-long. In claiming Sunday's final before 27,000 at the Home Depot Center, Columbus became the first team since the LA Galaxy in 2002 to pair the Supporters' Shield with an MLS Cup.
