It will be #1 Akron against the ACC in the 2009 College Cup next weekend as three ACC teams make up the final four. Can Akron go into ACC country and take the title? Akron is unbeaten on the year at an impressive 22-0-0 and took out Stanford 2-0 to earn their spot in the College Cup.
Otherwise it is an all ACC affair with Virginia, Wake Forest and North Carolina. Red-hot Virginia has to be a favorite as they been rolling for weeks with a stifling defense that has recorded 11 straight shutouts. Just a few weeks ago Virginia won the ACC Tournament on the same field.
Virginia will face Wake Forest in the first semifinal on Friday. Wake Forest is no stranger to the College Cup. Led by Zack Schilawski and Corben Bone Wake can score goals in bunches and should be a stiff test for the stout Virginia defense.
North Carolina will enjoy a decidedly home crowd as they try to knock off Akron who has been ranked #1 pretty much the entire season. UNC defeated Indiana 1-0 to claim their place at the College Cup on an Alex Dixon goal.
Semifinals: Friday, December 11
#2 Virginia vs. #3 Wake Forest, 5 pm ET
#5 North Carolina vs. #1 Akron, 7:30 pm ET
