Opening weekend of the college soccer season saw several surprising results as #1 UCLA lost a pair of tight games and 3 teams in the Soccermogul top 10 suffered defeats.
The premier tournament in the country took place in Indiana at the Adidas/IU Credit Union Classic where UCLA, Indiana, Maryland and Notre Dame faced off. Maryland and Indiana came through with a win and a draw while Notre Dame split their 2 games. The loser on the weekend was #1 UCLA which suffered losses to both Notre Dame and Indiana. Graham Zusi of Maryland and Kevin Alston of Indiana were the tourney MVPs.
Several upsets dotted the Soccermogul top 30. Most notable was North Carolina losing on their home field to Monmouth 1-0. NC outshot Monmouth 16-4 and had a pair of goals called back due to offside, but a second half goal from Monmouth's Damon Wilson would be the difference.
Defending national champions UC Santa Barbara also had a slow opening weekend suffering a defeat at the hands of Gonzaga and tying Stanford. The loss and tie saw UCSB fall from #3 to #12 in the latest Soccermogul top 30. Wake Forest took over the #1 ranking by defeating #19 Old Dominion and Monmouth.
