Major conferences around the nation are underway now and the meat of the schedule is upon the college soccer season. Several big early season conference matchups were played last weekend. Biggest of all was the clash between #1 Wake Forest and #2 Maryland on Friday night which Wake won 4-2. Read about the game here.
ACC -
Wake Forest served notice that they are the big dogs as they went to Maryland and won 4-2. Elsewhere in ACC play, Clemson battled to a scoreless draw with Duke while Virginia knocked off Virginia Tech 2-1. The big upset was North Carolina State taking out Boston College 2-0. Currently Virginia and Wake Forest lead the ACC both at 2-0 while Virginia Tech brings up the rear at 0-3. Next weekend shows Virginia at North Carolina.
Big Ten -
Northwestern got the big win of the weekend as they defeated Ohio State 1-0. Wisconsin and Michigan battled to a 1-1 draw while Michigan State beat Penn State in a wild 4-3 game with a Doug DeMartin hat trick. Indiana went out of conference losing 2-1 to UC Santa Barbara. Coming up, Northwestern has a big midweek visit to St Louis while Indiana faces Michigan next weekend.
Big East -
A few upsets dotted the weekend, but most notably was St Johns 3-1 win over UConn. South Florida sits at 4-0 after wins over Pitt and West Virginia. Syracuse pulled a big upset as they beat Providence but couldnt follow it up on Sunday as they fell to UConn. Louisville knocked off Notre Dame in overtime 2-1.
Other big games on the weekend -
Tulsa 4 SMU 1 - a huge win to give Tulsa the inside edge to the Conference USA championship as they pummeled the Mustangs in Dallas.
UC Santa Barbara 2 Indiana 1 - a big win for UCSB who has been up and down this year.
Brown 1 Boston College 0 - an important win to legitimize Brown
