Almost all of the seeded teams were able to advance in the second round of the NCAA Mens Soccer Tournament. Only a couple of the favored teams were sent packing, but several needed penalty kicks to slip by. Only three upsets took place. Most notably was Notre Dame being upset at home by Dartmouth who won 2-1 in overtime behind winner from Andrew Olsen in the 99th minute of play. UConn were also upset as they fell in penalty kicks to Brown. The only other seeded team to fall was Butler who were beaten by Michigan State.
Two other favored sides had to squeek by in penalty kicks. SMU needed a goal in the final minute to send the game to overtime against Creighton before advancing on penalty kicks. SMU will host upstart William and Mary next weekend after W&M slipped past UMBC also in penalties. Fourth seeded North Carolina narrowly escaped an upset bid by Georgetown, but advanced in penalty kicks as well.
Meanwhile, #1 seeded Louisville had no trouble with the College of Charleston and advances to face Ohio State. Second seeded Maryland also cruised as they crushed Penn 4-0. #3 seed Akron had a tougher test getting past West Virginia 3-2.
The sweet sixteen has several mouthwatering matchups on tap for next weekend. Akron gets redhot Indiana while Maryland meets Penn State. Dartmouth looks to keep their cinderella run going as they travel crosscountry to face UCLA. Brown also makes the crosscoutry trek to face California.
