No surprises here. The unbeaten and #1 ranked Louisville Cardinals will meet powerhouse Akron Sunday for the NCAA mens soccer championship. Both teams were challenged hard in the semifinal matchups on Friday night before advancing to the final.
Louisville once again worked their last minute magic as freshman supersub Aaron Horton flicked home the winner in the 89th minute of play to break a 1-1 deadlock. Louisville came out the aggressors in the match and should have been ahead early on if not for some goalline heroics from North Carolina. The game went scoreless into the second half before Austin Berry headed Louisville into the lead on 58 minutes. North Carolina would answer back though and tied the game just four minutes later through Stephen McCarthy. The match was destined to overtime before a bad giveaway in the North Carolina midfield led to the lightning attack that decided the game.
Akron were shocked by a first minute goal, but were able to rally and get the match tied at halftime. Akron were showing their class as they held possession and moved the ball, but Michigan had their chances on the night. In the 64th minute Michigan were nearly in front again, but Sonny Saad saw his shot denied by the post. Ten minutes later Akron had their winner as Kofi Sarkodie headed home a freekick. Akron will look to take the title after losing last year's College Cup in penalty kicks to Virginia.
