It's been a difficult couple of weeks for Chelsea and something the club is not used to. Getting bounced from the Champions League and then dropping points in the EPL championship race has put nerves on edge. Unfortunately, Aston Villa got in their way this afternoon and paid dearly for it.
Aston Villa put up a fight for the opening 30 minutes, but things deteriorated from there. An early Chelsea goal from Frank Lampard was cancelled out by a John Carew goal. It was a late first half penalty that signaled how the rest of the match would go. With only a minute to play in the opening half Yuri Zhirkov was fouled in the Aston Villa area giving Frank Lampard the chance at the spot kick. Lampard was true and Chelsea grabbed all the momentum at the break.
The second half would be all one way traffic as Chelsea exploded. Malouda would strike in the 57th and then another Lampard penalty kick would make it 4-1. Even with star striker Didier Drogba getting the day off Chelsea looked unstoppable. Malouda would hit again in the 68th and the rout was truly on. Kalou would add an insult in the 83rd before Lampard notched his fourth of the day providing the 7-1 margin. The win puts Chelsea back over Manchester United by two points. United does play Bolton later today with the opportunity to leap back into first place.
