Chelsea defeated Portsmouth 2-1 midweek to maintain their 3 point lead over Manchester United atop the EPL. Chelsea slipped by last place Portsmouth Wednesday 2-1 with goals from Nicolas Anelka and Frank Lampard to avoid an embarrassing result at Stamford Bridge. Chelsea coach Carlo Ancelotti decided to rest star striker Didier Drogba as well as Malouda for the match. Anelka will be looked upon to shoulder more of the scoring load with Drogba expected to miss most of January away at the African Cup of Nations.
Meanwhile, Manchester United had a much easier time of things beating Wolves 3-0. Wolves manager Mick McCarthy decided to make 10 changes to the side which beat Tottenham Hotspur at the weekend leading to rage from supporters and questioning from the EPL who felt they basically conceded the match.
The results leave Chelsea on 40 points with Manchester United on 37 with both teams having played 17 matches. Manchester United faces a difficult trip to face Fulham who sit 9th and are staunch at home. Chelsea are also on the road as they travel to bottom side West Ham.
Arsenal and Aston Villa are level on 32 points with Tottenham just behind on 30. Disappointing Liverpool sit at 27 tied with the surprising Birmingham squad.
