A Nicolas Anelka goal just before halftime stood up and lifted Chelsea to a 1-0 victory over Bolton at Stamford Bridge. The Blues had to wait until the 43rd minute to break down a stubborn Bolton side who almost snatched a draw in the closing stages. A quick start by Chelsea went unrewarded as loads of early pressure did not result in a goal. The momentum was lost when John Terry went down with an ankle injury and needed treatment breaking the flow of the game.
Bolton dug in and survived the early onslaught. They then settled and played pretty well in the difficult confines of Stamfrod Bridge. It was in the dying moments of the first half when Nicolas Anelka broke the tie. A Didier Drogba cross was headed home from close range by Anelka and Chelsea had their goal.
The second half would be tight though as Bolton made some game attempts at tying the match. Six minutes from time Bolton substitute Johan Elmander was inches away from equalising when he headed a cross from Taylor just wide.
The win moves Chelsea four points clear of Manchester United at the top of the EPL standings. Arsenal sits six points behind and can skip over United with a win at Tottenham tomorrow. Only four matches remain and it will be difficult to catch Chelsea at the top.
