AS Roma went to Real Madrid and pulled off the upset over a 10 man Real Madrid side. Meanwhile, Chelsea had little problem with an Olympiakos side that has still never won in England. In the final match Schalke prevailed over Porto in penalties.
AS Roma 2 Real Madrid 1
A ruthless AS Roma snatched a 2-1 win over 10-man Real Madrid at the Bernabeu on Wednesday to clinch their place in the Champions League quarter-finals 4-2 on aggregate. Real took the initiative for most of the game, but suffered a major setback when Portugal centre-back Pepe was sent off for picking up a second booking 19 minutes from time. They were still reeling from the blow when Brazilian midfielder Taddei found space in the Real defence to head the visitors in front. Real hit back two minutes later when skipper Raul steered in after some neat work by Robinho but Roma put them to the sword when substitute Mirko Vucinic scored with a diving header just before the final whistle.
Chelsea 3 Olympiakos 0
Chelsea cruised into the quarter-finals of the Champions League with a comprehensive victory over Olympiacos at Stamford Bridge. On the eve of this second leg, Avram Grant was lost for words to describe what failure in this tie would mean - and the Greeks' performance may have summed up why. While Arsenal had to produce an epic performance to defeat AC Milan, Chelsea's passage was much easier, particularly after taking the lead early on. The goalscorers illustrated the selection problems Grant faces. The first two strikes came from Michael Ballack and Frank Lampard, who effectively kept Michael Essien on the bench. Salomon Kalou grabbed the third, the Ivory Coast international preferred as a wide forward to Nicolas Anelka.
Schalke over Porto in penalties
Schalke beat 10-man Porto 4-1 on penalties to reach the Champions League quarter-finals for the first time after drawing 1-1 on aggregate on Wednesday. An 86th minute Lisandro Lopez strike cancelled out Kevin Kuranyi's first-leg goal while the Germans had young goalkeeper Manuel Neuer to thank for knocking out the former champions. The 21-year-old saved two spot kicks in the shootout after making a series of impressive stops during the match, including twice keeping out point blank headers from Porto's Moroccan forward Tarik Sektioui either side of halftime. The home side, who were lucky not to have goalkeeper Helton sent off when he handled a goal-bound effort outside his area in the second half, were reduced to 10 men when defender Fucile was shown a straight red card for an 82nd minute foul.
