Champions League - Arsenal win at AC Milan, Man U over Lyon

Champions League - Arsenal win at AC Milan, Man U over Lyon

Arsenal went to Milan and knocked out title holders AC Milan behind second half goals from Fabregas and Adebayor.  AC Milan had never been beaten at home by an English side before today.  The match started with AC Milan as the aggressors.  An early flurry of crosses and corners yielded no goals though as Arsenal's defense stood tall.  The match began to tilt Arsenal's way the final 25 minutes of the half as the visitors were getting to all the loose balls and holding possession well.  Adebayor was active up top, but the half ended 0-0.

The second half was much the same as Arsenal once again controlled the majority of possession and territory.  It looked as though Arsenal weren't going to be able to cash in on the dominance and the match would go to extra time before Cesc Fabregas picked up a ball in the middle of the field.  He dribbled forward and evaded a half hearted challenge from the normally strong Gatusso before firing a speculative shot. that Milan keeper Kalac couldn't get a hand to as it found the side netting.  Arsenal celebrated while Milan stood with hands on head.  Adebayor was the beneficiary of some good work from Theo Walcott to get the 2nd goal late in injury time as AC Milan pushed forward for the equalizer.

At Old Trafford, a first half goal from Cristiano Ronaldo was enough to send Manchester United to the final 8 as they prevailed 1-0 over French side Lyon.  United controlled the possession and the flow as Lyon was only able to muster a single shot on net the entire night.

In Spain, Barcelona finished the job they began in Scotland by defeating Celtic 1-0.  Barcelona came home with a 3-2 advantage and a 3rd minute goal from Xavi on a Sylvinho cross ended much of the drama for the evening.  The gulf in class between the two sides was evident in both legs of the tie but the Hoops can feel no embarrassment at losing out to a side packed with a wonderful array of talent, even if it was not exactly in full throttle in this match.
