Champions League play opened on Tuesday with both Manchester United and Chelsea grabbing 1-0 wins while Cristiano Ronaldo scored a pair of freekicks as Real Madrid won 5-2. Manchester United made the long trip to Turkey to face Besiktas and left it late. As the match approached full time and still tied 0-0 veteran Paul Scholes stepped up. The Scholes header lifted Man U to a valuable road win on Matchday 1. Meanwhile, Cheslea was hosting Porto and missing suspended Didier Drogba. His regular strike partner Nikolas Anelka grabbed the winner just after halftime in the 1-0 Chelsea victory.
FC Zurich of Switzerland were the first to feel the Real Madrid fury as they hosted the free spenders. Cristiano Ronaldo rifled home a pair of freekicks while Raul, Higuain and Guti also scored. The defense could be a concern though as FC Zurich were able to draw a 3 goal deficit back to 3-2 in the 2nd half of play. The comeback was ended on Cristiano Ronaldo's freekick that hit the Zurich keeper right in the hands before deflecting into the net.
Elsewhere, AC Milan picked up an impressive away win defeating Marseille 2-1 with both from Filippo Inzaghi. Wolfsburg took down CSKA Moscow 3-1 in Germany and Atletico Madrid layed an egg being held at home to a draw by minnows Apoel Nicosia. Bayern Munich won comfortably 3-0 at Maccabi Haifa and Juventus and Bordeaux drew 1-1.
