Well the Wednesday games of Champions League Matchday 1 did not yield the surprises that the Tuesday games did. All the majors left the day with a win or draw to show. Some clubs did claim points in difficult venues though as Villareal held Manchester United to a 0-0 draw in England and Arsenal made the tough trip to Russia earning a 1-1 draw with Dynamo Kiev.
Group E -
Both group matches ended in scoreless draws on the day. The biggest result has to go to Villareal though as they withstood a Manchester United onslaught and a Cristiano Ronaldo return to escape with the point from England. The game had Celtic unable to score at home to Danish side AaB. The next round shows Manchester United in Denmark
Group F -
Bayern Munich jumps top the group lead as they travelled to Romania and defeated Steau Bucuresti 1-0 on a Daniel van Buyten goal. The other match in the group had French side Lyon rallying from a 2 goal halftime deficit to net 2 in the last 20 minutes and earn a 2-2 home draw.
Group G -
Porto got off to the good start as they took care of Fenerbache at home by a 3-1 score. The other match pitted Arsenal in Russia against Dynamo Kiev. It looked like a Russian win until William Gallas scored the equalizer in the 88th minute and give Arsenal a valuable point. Arsenal hosts Porto on matchday 2.
Group H -
Both giants won their home matches today as a Del Pierro goal lifted Juventus to a 1-0 win over Zenit St Petersburg while Real Madrid won 2-0 at home to BATE Borislav of Belarus.
