Burnley pulls famous upset beating Manchester United

Burnley pulls famous upset beating Manchester United

Nobody saw this coming that's for sure.  New boys Burnley pulled a massive upset Wednesday knocking off defending champions Manchester United 1-0 behind a Robbie Blake winner.  Man U dominated the game but Burnley put in the work and showed the heart necessary to ride the Robbie Blake volley to victory.

Man U had their chances and should have been ahead early.  A couple of near misses and a Michael Owen goal ruled offside left the match scoreless and after 15 minutes.  From there Burnley began to get into the match creating chances of their own and forcing Ben Foster in the United nets into a couple of brave saves.  The decisive blow would come in the 19th minute as when Stephen Jordan floated a ball across the Manchester box where Robbie Blake was waiting to volley it home.

The fans were going nuts but Manchester United would not bow down and went back to the attack.  Just before halftime Patrice Evra got loose in the Burnley penalty area and drew a spot kick as he was fouled.  Michael Carrick stepped up only to see Brian Jensen make the save and keep the Burnley lead.

Manchester United controlled much of the ball in the 2nd half but rarely created anything more than half-chances.  The Burnley upset ended Manchester United's streak of 17 straight wins against newly promoted sides and serves notice that it is going to be a wild EPL season.
