Brazil and Uruguay book semifinal spots at FIFA U17 World Cup

Brazil and Uruguay book semifinal spots at FIFA U17 World Cup
Uruguay made short work of cinderellas Uzbekistan in a FIFA U17 World Cup quarterfinal on Sunday in Mexico.  Uzbekistan had been on a suprising run in their first ever World Cup appearance, but today was not their day.

Goals from Santiago Charamoni and Rodrigo Aguirre on either side of halftime were plenty for Uruguay in the win.  On the opening goal, Charamoni brought the ball down well on his chest from a long pass through midfield and tapped coolly into the bottom corner.

The Asians came out from the locker-room chasing the game, but Maximiliano Moreira had the first opportunity to score up the other end. He raced through into the area and his chipped effort was only just snuffed out by Kholmurodov. Seconds later, though, it was 2-0. Rodrigo Aguirre made a similar run into the box and hit the top corner with his sizzling shot.

Japan had been roaring along in the tournament putting on impressive displays along the way with a sharp passing game.  Brazil were up to the challenge though as the two sides fought back and forth in a wildly entertaining match.

Brazil came out all guns blazing as they raced out to a 3-0 lead after 60 minutes of play.  Goals from Leo, Ademilson and Adryan provided what looked like a comfortable lead.  Japan was up for a fightback though.

They fired back in the 77th and 88th minutes to draw within a single goal at 3-2 providing for some nervy minutes at the end.  Brazil survived though and will face fellow South Americans Uruguay in the semifinals.
