It had the potential to be one of the best games of the 2010 World Cup. Instead, the Group G standings dictated that it would not. Neither team needed to jeopardize or stretch themselves. Portugal needed to protect the healthy goal differential advantage they held over Ivory Coast. Thus they played it safely. Cristiano Ronaldo was the lone ranger up top for Portugal and they were more than willing to allow Brazil to boss the game.
Brazil needed nothing more than a draw to win the group. They probed around searching for a goal, but rarely took a big chance in the second half. Thus Brazil wins the group and Portugal advances in second place as Ivory Coast was only able to beat the hapless North Koreans 2-0 in the other game.
It was a disappointing game in which the crowd whistled their disapproval and instead turned their attention to doing the wave. Brazil and Portugal now await the results from Group H where everything hangs in the balance. Switzerland, Chile or Spain could be the opponents depending on how things play out.
