Arsenal and coach Arsene Wenger were in a tough spot. A huge Champions League match against powerful Bayern Munich on Tuesday in Germany and an FA Cup match with Blackburn today. Wenger chose to emphasize the Champions League match which should surprise nobody leaving Theo Walcott, Santi Cazorla and Jack Wilshere all on the bench today. Arsenal should still have had enough quality to dispatch the lower division Rovers at home.
Wrong.
Blackburn went into The Emirates and stunned Arsenal with a second half goal and held on for a 1-0 win. The Rovers have still yet to concede a goal in this season's FA Cup.
Arsenal bossed the game as expected but were wasteful when it really counted. Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain, Gervinho and Rosicky lacked that final ball to get Arsenal on the scoreboard.
When you let a lower side hang around you tend to get punished and Blackburn took their chance while Arsenal were wasting theirs. Martin Olsson blasted a shot that Arsenal keeper Szczesny could only parry. The rebound fell to Colin Kazim-Richards who poked the ball home for the shock lead.
Arsenal set about fighting back but were just as wasteful to the groans of the home fans. A final close range save of a Theo Walcott header signaled Arsenal were going out of the FA Cup. Despite being outshot 26-6 on the day Blackburn claimed a famous victory and move to the quarterfinal round of the competition.
