Birmingham pulled the shocker on Sunday at Wembley as they completed the upset by knocking off Arsenal 2-1 to win the Carling Cup. It is Birmingham's first trophy since 1963 while it was Arsenal's third final loss since 2005. The first half ended 1-1 with Birmingham opening the scoring in the 28th minute as their tall striker Nikola Zigic headed home. Arsenal answered ten minues later as Robin van Persie tied the game.
The match looked to be headed to overtime until the fateful play in the 89th minute. Ben Foster took a long freekick flighting it all the way to the Arsenal penalty area. Zigic headed the ball on looking for Obafemi Martins. Arsenal defender Laurent Koscielny and keeper Wojciech Szczesny both went for the ball and made a total mes of it. The loose ball ended up on the foot of Martins who slipped it into the net for the winner setting off a wild celebration. Birmingham is fighting for their life at the bottom of the EPL are only two points above the relegation zone. Hopefully the momentum from the Carling Cup win can propel them to safety in league.
"It's an achievement when you consider who we were up against," Birmingham manager Alex McLeish said. "We weren't given a prayer by the pundits and the bookies but we believed today. It was a titanic performance by the players."
