David Beckham tears achilles, out of World Cup

David Beckham ruptured his achilles tendon Sunday in a Serie A match and will miss the 2010 World Cup.  The injury came in the second half of the AC Milan - Chievo game.  David Beckham received a ball in the midfield and turned with it under no pressure.  After a little hop Beckham passed the ball off and immediately showed discomfort.  He signaled to the sideline and hopped off the field for examination.

AC Milan coach Leonardo said afterwards, "David understood immediately that he had torn his Achilles tendon. When the tendon breaks, everything comes away and the muscle starts to rise. I felt great pity for him. This injury has been a heavy blow for him and for us. Unfortunately the party is ruined."

AC Milan have revealed that Beckham is set to fly to Finland on Monday for an operation to repair the achilles problem. His parent club, LA Galaxy of the MLS, are understood to be awaiting further news on the incident before issuing a statement on his future.   The bottom line is that this could be career threatening and not just an eight month injury.
