After a hearing the war of words and the hype build for over a week the El Clasico turned out to be a one sided affair Monday in Spain. It was all Barcelona as Lionel Messi and his mates ran roughshod over Cristiano Ronaldo and Real Madrid. Both sides had been quite boisterous about their chances heading into the match, but only Barcelona will be talking now.
Lionel Messi has been the one scoring the goals for Barcelona, on Monday he turned into provider as he slotted magical pass after magic pass into the gaps of the Real Madrid defense. David Villa was the primary beneficiary as Messi found him on his well timed runs. Barcelona forwards and midfielders were racing at the overwhelmed Real Madrid defense all evening long.
People may talk about the EPL being the best league in the world and such, but anyone who watched the display in Barcelona would be hard pressed to say they have seen a more impressive performance in some time. Barcelona were simply fantastic and Lionel Messi was pulling the strings all night. Even the powerful Jose Mourinho was helpless on this night.
Barca were in front after only 10 minutes. Iniesta slipped a ball in behind for Xavi who raced in and tapped home past Iker Casillas. The Camp Nou went crazy and Barcelona were on their way to a historic night. Just minutes later things went from bad to worse for Real Madrid. A perfect cross from David Villa eluded the diving CAsillas and found Pedro on the back post for an easy finish. 2-0 to Barca.
Cristiano Ronaldo was basically a non factor. He was barely allowed a touch by the swarming Barca defense. The first half ended with lots of Barcelona possession and some rougher play as Real Madrid chased the game.
The second half was the Lionel Messi show. In the 55th minute Messi cut inside from the right and played a perfect ball to the feet of the cutting David Villa. Villa took a touch and fired into the side netting past Casillas. A perfect pass leading to a perfect finish. The celebration was on and only three minutes later it was to be 4-0. Again it was Messi providing Villa. A perfect pass in behind found Villa racing to goal where he calmly finished.
The Barcelona midfield was just dominant as Real just could not hold any possession whatsoever and when they did get close to the ball it seemed a hard tackle was in order. The yellow cards were flying as Real Madrid had seven players booked by only the 75th minute of play.
There was still one more goal to come as Barca put an exclamation point on the evening. A perfect cross from Bojan found the racing Jeffren to flick home. The final goes 5-0 to Barcelona in dominating fashion.
