Barcelona has dropped plans to establish a MLS expansion franchise in Miami and have withdrawn their bid due to the poor world economy. The Miami/Barcelona application was thought to be a frontrunner in a crowded market for two new MLS franchises that were to be awarded. Barcelona did say they were still interested in the North American soccer market and would look to get involved again at some point in the future.
While there is no shortage of candidate cities ready to step in, the news will come as a blow to MLS, which would have loved to have had Barcelona's global branding power to help the expansion of the league. The Seattle Sounders will join as the 15th MLS club when the new season starts later this month. A Philadelphia team will join next year.
