Arsenal opened their EPL title chase in grand fashion Saturday by ruining the home opener for Everton in a 6-1 thrashing. Everton looked quite pedestrian as they stood around and watched Arsenal knock in goal after goal as Tim Howard was helpless in the nets.
It looked as if Everton had rarely even seen a set piece as they fell to their worst home defeat since 1958. Denilson opened the scoring for Arsenal in the 26th after which Everton put forth a fight to level the match only to have Denilson clear Fellaini's header off the line on the other end. After that it was all Arsenal though.
The 2nd and 3rd goals came in quick succession just before halftime and both were on set pieces. First Vermaelen knocked in a Robin Van Persie freekick and shortly after it was William Galles heading home a Fabregas free kick as Everton players stood and observed.
The 2nd half would be no prettier for the home squad. Cesc Fabregas would grab goals in the 47th and 69th minutes before Eduardo would add insult with a goal in the 88th. With the thrashing Arsenal have clearly shown they'll be a side to be dealt with this year. Their speed of play and finishing overwhelmed what many think are a top 8 EPL side in Everton.
