Both English Premier League sides moved into the Champions League semifinals with wins on Wednesday making three of the four sides left being English. Barcelona joins EPL sides Chelsea, Arsenal and Manchester United in the final four.
Manchester United had the hardest task on the day having to win where no English side had ever won before. Porto had never lost at home to an EPL side, but Cristiano Ronaldo would serve notice early on that Manchseter United has plans to end that streak when he struck in the 6th minute. Ronaldo picked up the ball 30 yards out turned with a touch and rifled a ball into the net.
Who would have known that would be the only goal of the match. Porto put some pressure on in the 2nd half, but were never able to get a prolonged attack established. Wayne Rooney, Nani and Cristiano Ronaldo did very well at holding possession up the field for Man U. Porto had a chance for the magical goal late on when Lisandro Lopez fired a shot off a cross that went straight to van der Sar.
In the other Champions League quarterfinal Arsenal had no problem with Villareal at the Emirates running out 3-0 winners behind goals from Theo Walcott, Adebayor and Robin van Persie. The match was never really in doubt as Walcott put Arsenal ahead after only 10 minutes.
So the semifinals are set with Arsenal facing Manchester United and a juicy Barcelona-Chelsea clash.
