Argentina ran out big winners over Mexico on Wednesday night scoring behind goals from Nicolas Burdisso, Lionel Messi, Maximiliano Rodriguez and Sergio Aguero. A record soccer crowd of 68,498, including incoming Mexico coach Sven-Goran Eriksson, piled into the Qualcomm Stadium to watch El Tri get ripped to shreds by their South American opponents. Argentina is currently rated the FIFA #1 squad in the world and showed why they have earned that ranking with a thrilling display of quality soccer.
Mexico’s only goal came via Antonio Naelson in the 62nd minute, and was quickly answered by Argentine prodigy Sergio Aguero nine minutes later. Burdisso’s opener came after 11 minutes when he slotted past Mexican keeper Oswaldo Sanchez, and Messi added the second from close range on 18 minutes.
Rodriguez, who scored a memorable winner against Mexico in the second round of the 2006 World Cup, netted the third after a favourable deflection. Carlos Vela missed a golden opportunity to put Mexicans ahead in the seventh minute, beating two Argentine defenders and dribbling into the box before shooting wide. Argentina keeper Roberto Abbondanzieri made three saves, while his counterpart Sanchez made two.
