Revolution grabs Andrew Farrell tops in MLS Superdraft

Revolution grabs Andrew Farrell tops in MLS Superdraft
The New England Revolution traded up in the days before the MLS Superdraft and they got their man on Thursday as they selected monster defender Andrew Farrell out of Louisville with the top pick.

“You never know until they call your name,” Farrell said. “I’m grateful for that. Obviously, there are a lot of top guys that are here. You just never know, so I’m excited for the opportunity to be in New England.”

Another Big East star went 2nd in the draft as Chivas USA look to turn around their dismal performance by snapping up creative midfielder Carlos Alvarez from UConn.  Chivas had announced days earlier that Alvarez was their man.

Toronto FC grabbed a Canadian with the 3rd pick.  They were able to get the MLS Combine MVP Kyle Bekker.  The central midfielder out of Boston College is excited to be heading home to play his pro ball.  “It’s an exciting time, it’s great to be home and I’m looking forward to playing in front of those great fans in Toronto.”

Attacking speed went at #4 and #5 and both players were taken by Vancouver.  The Whitecaps were clearly looking at their attacking future as young forwards Kekuta Manneh and Martin Rennie landed in their laps.  Look out for Vancouver in a couple of years if these two talents pan out.

FC Dallas might have gotten the steal of the draft though at #7 as stud central defender Walker Zimmerman.  The 6'3 player out of Furman was expected to go much higher leaving FCD delighted he was still available.  FC Dallas can certainly draft centerbacks (George John and Matt Hedges) and expect Zimmerman to be in the same mold.

The MLS Supplemental Draft is Tuesday.
