The US mens national soccer team took care of business Wednesday night as they dispatched an overmatched Trinidad & Tobago side 3-0 in Chicago. With the win the Americans takae a stranglehold on their group and are virtually assured of passage to the final round of qualifying for South Africa 2010.
Michael Bradley got the US off to a fast start as he scored in the 9th minute and the US never looked back. Clint Dempsey made it 2-0 in the 17th and the match was effectively over. Trinidad did open the 2nd half brightly as they looked more confident going forward and were willing to take more chances. Unfortunately, it was the American side that cashed in as Brian Ching headed home the 3rd in the 57th minute. From there tha match languished as the American subs made no impact on the match and Trinidad were well beaten.
"It's ideal, right?" Landon Donovan said. "We were excellent tonight. The first half was one of the most dominating performances I've ever been a part of. We were good all over the field."
The victory was hardly a surprise. The Americans are 25-1-7 in home qualifiers since May 1985, their only defeat a 3-2 loss to Honduras in September 2001, and have outscored opponents 21-0 on US soil since 2004. They're also 9-0-2 in World Cup qualifying against T&T. Next up for the United States is a home game with Cuba on October 10th.
