The American's were looking for a spark after having to rally for a 2-2 draw in El Salvador over the weekend. Coach Bob Bradley threw a much more offensive lineup on the field as Jozy Altidore got the start up top, Landon Donovan dropped into the mid and Beasley was allowed to attack out of the back. The flow of play was much better and the US was able to dominate possession all night.
The first goal of the match came when Brian Ching flicked a header to the running Landon Donovan. Landon controlled the ball and whipped a low cross to the backpost where it found Jozy Altidore to smash it home.
The game stayed 1-0 until the second half when the US would put the match away. Again it was Donovan getting loose and he found Altidore at the top of the box where Jozy juked the center back and nicely finished for the 2-0 lead. In the 89th minute the 19 yr old Altidore would become the youngest American to notch an international hat-trick when he scored a low shot on another assist from Landon Donovan.
The win keeps the US mens soccer team on top of the CONCACAF qualifying group on 7 points. Costa Rica sits right behind on 6 after they defeated El Salvador 1-0. The big upset on the evening was in Honduras where Mexico fell 3-1 leaving them 4th in the group on only 3 points and feeling the pressure to qualify for South Africa 2010.
