North Carolina topping ACC soccer

North Carolina topping ACC soccer

With only two matches to go in ACC soccer play North Carolina has a slim lead in the conference standings with Maryland and Wake Forest close behind.  Maryland made ground on both UNC and Wake thanks to their 3-2  win home against Clemson.  Meanwhile, North Carolina tied 1-1 at Boston College and Wake Forest tied at North Carolina State.

It all sets up the big showdown next weekend as Wake Forest visits Maryland. The winner will pretty much wrap up no worse than a second place ACC finish and give themselves a chance to overtake North Carolina for the title.  North Carolina is clearly in the drivers seat though as their final two ACC matches are at home against Virginia Tech and Clemson.

Over the weekend Duke traveled to the west coast for a showdown with UC Santa Barbara in a match shown on Fox Soccer Channel.  It was a fast paced match played in front of over 11,000 fans.  The speed of UCSB and forward Sam Garza were too much for Duke as UCSB notched two second half goals to win 2-0.  In ACC play Virginia won the rivalry match with instate rivals Virginia Tech 2-1 in overtime.   Greg Monaco scored the winner in the 92nd minute off a corner kick.
