Several upsets marked the 2nd round of the NCAA Mens Tournament. SMU, North Carolina, West Virginia all went down in flames Wednesday night. UC Santa Barbara went into Dallas and took it to the #3 seeded SMU Mustangs. UCSB were clearly the aggressors on the evening committing 25 fouls to SMUs 11. The aggressive demeanor paid off as UCSB scored in the 33rd minute. SMU evened the game in the 40th minute no a goal from Scott Corbin, however UCSB quickly answered back to take a 2-1 lead to halftime and all the momentum. The 2nd half was much of the same as UCSB outshot SMU 16-8 on the night. The clincher came in the 76th minute as Eric Avila made it 3-1.
North Carolina fell at the hands of Old Dominion 1-0. Despite dominating the match and outshooting ODU 13-3 North Carolina could not find the net in a disappointing loss. West Virginia was shocked by UNC Greensboro as All American Scott Jones scored late in the 1st overtime period to win it 2-1. It was a very entertaining match that saw both sides have several good chances with shots going 22-16 in favor of West Virginia.
As 3 of the favorites fell many others cruised into the 3rd round. Virginia smashed Bucknell 4-0 while Maryland had little trouble in knocking St Johns out of the NCAAs for the 4th straight year 2-0. Also easily advancing were UCLA 3-0 over Harvard and Wake Forest 5-1 over an outclassed Hofstra squad.
