Champions League Matchday 5 Wednesday Games

Published 11/24/2006 8:34:39 PM by Soccer Mogul Staff from Dallas, Texas U.S.A.

Wednesdays games wrapped up Matchday 5 and set the stage for the final round of games in the group stages of the Champions League. The top two teams in each of the 8 groups advance to the knockout stages of the competition.

Group A --
Per Mertersacker's 27th minute header stood up as German side Bremen won at home over Chelsea 1-0. Chelsea has already secured a spot in the next round but the Bremen 3 points has kept the pressure on Barcelona who now must win at home over Bremen in the final matchday. A Bremen win or draw will eliminate Barca. Giuly and Iniesto scored as Barcelona dispatched Bulgarian side Levski 2-0.
Verder Bremen 1 Chelsea 0
Barcelona 2 Levski 0

Group B --
A 2-2 draw in Russia with Spartak Moscow pushed Bayern Munich into the next round of play. A Kovac goal in the final 20 minutes was enough to salvage the home draw after Pizzaro had scored a pair for Bayern. Inter Milan claimed the other spot in the group with a 1-0 home win over Sporting on a first half goal from Hernan Crespo. Bayern and Inter will meet in Germany to decide the group winners in the final matchday.
Spartak Moscow 2 Bayern Munich 2
Inter Milan 1 Sporting 0

Group C --
Liverpool and PSV will advance from this group into the knockout stages. Thanks to a 2-0 home win over PSV in matchday 5 Liverpool have clinched group winners. It was a costly win however for the English side as Xabi Alonso, Jermaine Pennant and Mark Gonzalez all suffered injuries and had to be substituted in the game. Bordeaux was able to clinch a spot in the UEFA Cup with their 3-1 win over Galatasaray that clinched 3rd place for the French side.
Bordeaux 3 Galatasaray 1
Liverpool 2 PSV Eindhoven 0

Group D --
Spanish side Valencia has had little trouble in this group emerging as clear winners after a 2-0 win over Greek Olympiakos. Goals from Miguel Angel Angulo and Fernando Morientes on either side of halftime provided the margin. Roma's surprising loss to Shakhtar gives the Ukrainian team hope that they can jump over Roma in the final matchday and claim the 2nd spot. Shakhtar will have to win at Olympiakos and Roma must lose at home to a Valencia side that will probably be resting its stars. On that note Roma still looks solid to move on.
Valencia 2 Olympiakos 0
Shakhtar 1 Roma 0
