Big Ten Soccer - 2007 Mens Recruiting

Published 3/8/2007 8:55:39 PM by Shane Barrow from Dallas, Texas
Indiana University
The Indiana University men's soccer team has announced the signing of seven student-athletes for the fall 2007 season. The group consists of four National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA) All-Americans and two state players of the year. Five players have led their teams to high school state championships.

"This is a class of winners," head coach Mike Freitag said. "Many of the players in this class have won championships in high school or at the national level. A winning character is one of the things that we look for when we recruit for the IU soccer program, and all of these players have demonstrated that character on and off the field."

Andrew Adlard (Wisconsin/Brookfield East H.S.), Michael Roach (Missouri/Chaminade College Prep), Tyler McCarroll (Indiana/Carmel H.S.), Rich Balchan (Indiana/Carmel H.S.), Alec Purdie (Indiana/Elkhart Central), Max Weston (Ohio/Worthington Christian H.S.) and Michael Munroe (Indiana/North Central H.S.) each bring a wealth of experience and talent to the Hoosiers this fall.

"We are very proud to have players from within our state help us continue to build upon our `tradition of excellence,'" Freitag said. "Our staff is very excited for next fall to integrate this outstanding incoming class with our strong returning group of players"

“The addition of this class meshes well with our current players and increases our athleticism and soccer intelligence,” said Burns. “Each of these young men has the ability to significantly contribute to our team. Michigan State University
As Joe Baum enters his 31st year as head coach of the Michigan State men's soccer program, he will seek out his 300th career win with a team that features 20 players from Michigan, including five new additions for the fall of 2007, as he announced Tuesday that Matt Cebula, Jeremy Clark, Nosa Iyoha, Kolt Martin, and Spencer Thompson will join the Spartans.

"Our 2007 recruiting class is the strongest we have had in several years," said Baum, who is four wins shy of becoming the 52nd coach in NCAA history to reach 300 career wins. "This class brings back a depth of talent to our MSU program that we lacked this past fall 2006. We expect a number of these recruits to be immediate program contributors."

The group also has a close relationship with one another, as Cebula, Clark and Thompson all played together on the Olympic Development Region II team, taking trips to Italy and Argentina together. Iyoha, Thompson and Clark played together with the Vardar Stars soccer club and they all also travelled together with the Region II club to Costa Rica.

Northwestern University -
EVANSTON, Ill. -- Head men's soccer coach Tim Lenahan Monday announced his 2007 recruiting class. Lenahan inked players from all over the Midwest and East Coast from New York to Pennsylvania, Ohio, Indiana and Illinois.

The class consists of Piero Bellizzi (Rye, N.Y./Rye), Jason Drews (Downers Grove, Ill./Downers Grove), Matt Eliason (Lombard, Ill./Glenbard East), Pat Gibson (Westerville, Ohio/Westerville North), Jack Hillgard (Lombard, Ill./Benet Academy), Jonathan Kammo (Naperville, Nequa Valley), Drew Kotler (Wynnewood, Pa./Lower Merion), Cody Stanley (Lansing, Ind./Mt. Carmel), and Lucas Swertloff (Brooklyn, N.Y./Midwood).

"This class enters as one of the most decorated groups at the club, ODP and high school level that we have had to date," Lenahan said. "We have four players with National Team experience in Piero Bellizzi, Lucas Swertloff, Drew Kotler and Cody Stanley and four regional team players in Patrick Gibson, Bellizzi, Swertloff and Kotler. Three players from the Chicago Magic who were voted the No. 1 club in the U.S. for the third year running in Stanley, Jack Hillgard and Jason Drews.

"In addition, we have continued to get players who have come through our College Soccer Training Center at Northwestern University in the summer with Matt Eliason, Drews, and Bellizzi, all of whom really grabbed our attention during the camp. We were able to add a goalkeeper (Kotler), defenders (Stanley, Gibson, Drews, Hillgard), some attack oriented midfielders (Bellizzi, Swertloff) and a forward (Eliason). This group was brought in to replace the most successful class in Northwestern history and overall, I believe, a very well-rounded and talented class that should have an impact right away. With a new, state-of-the-art soccer facility ready to go next year, this class can help us continue the development of our program into one of the nation's elite."
