Bayern Munich, Liverpool, PSV, Valencia advance to second round of Champions League

Published 11/3/2006 8:36:29 AM by Associated Press from Associated Press
Bayern Munich, Liverpool, PSV Eindhoven and Valencia became the first teams to advance to the second round of the Champions League on Tuesday. Chelsea and FC Barcelona will have to wait after a 2-2 tie in Group A.

Bayern, a four-time champion, advanced from Group B despite a 0-0 tie against visiting Sporting Lisbon. Five-time champion Liverpool moved on from Group C, beating Bordeaux 3-0 on two goals from Luis Garcia and another from Steven Gerrard. In the same group, PSV reached the knockout stage with a 2-0 win over Galatasaray.

Valencia advanced from Group D after a 2-2 tie at Shakhtar Donetsk.

Chelsea earned a late draw at Barcelona on an injury-time goal from Didier Drogba. Chelsea has 10 points from four games and is nearly certain of advancing. Defending champion Barcelona has only five points in the group, two behind Werder Bremen, which beat Levski Sofia 3-0. Bremen plays at Barcelona on Dec. 5 in a game that could determine which team advances.

Also Tuesday, Inter Milan defeated Spartak Moscow 1-0 in Group B, and Olympiakos tied 1-1 at AS Roma in Group D.

Despite reaching the next stage, Bayern was booed off the field by its 66,000 fans following the scoreless tie. A free kick by Sporting Lisbon's Joao Martins that ricocheted off the crossbar was the game's best chance. "Naturally they come to see goals, but today nothing worked," Bayern defender Daniel van Buyten said.

Liverpool dominated after Bordeaux's Fernando Menegazzo was sent off in the 67th. Garcia gave the English team the lead in the 23rd, and Steven Gerrard made it 2-0 in the 71st. Garcia scored his second goal two minutes later.

PSV advanced on goals by Timmy Simons and Arouna Kone, both coming after Galatasaray was reduced to 10 men late in the first half.

In Barcelona, Deco gave the defending champions a 1-0 lead after only three minutes. Frank Lampard equalized in the 52nd with a curving shot from the goal line, but former Chelsea striker Eidur Gudjohnsen made it 2-1 in the 58th.

Werder Bremen went ahead Tuesday on an own-goal by Levski Sofia goalkeeper Nikolai Mihailov in the 33rd. Frank Baumann made it 2-0 in the 35th and Torsten Frings added another two minutes later.

In Moscow, Inter Milan beat Spartak Moscow 1-0 on Julio Ricardo Cruz's first-minute goal. Inter has six points in Group B and hopes to join Bayern Munich in the next stage.

In Kiev, Ukraine, Valencia rallied twice on goals from Fernando Morientes and Roberto Ayala to draw 2-2 with Shakhtar. Valencia has 10 points to lead Group D.

In the other Group D game, Roma got a 1-1 draw with Olympiakos on Francesco Totti's equalizer in the 67th. Julio Cesar scored in the 19th for Olympiakos. Roma has seven points and is hoping to join Valencia.
