Despite a winter of labor disputes, a major injury to David Beckham and rumors of Landon Donovan not returning the 2010 MLS season got underway this weekend. And an interesting weeked it was. The expansion Philadelphia Union kicked things off on Thursday night falling 2-0 to the Sounders in front of a wild 36,000 in Seattle. It was the best MLS crowd I had seen to date signing the entire evening.
The New York Red Bulls opened their new stadium in style defeating Santos last week in a friendly and then taking out the Chicago Fire 1-0 yesterday on a Joel Lindpere first half goal. Could we see big things from Red Bull this year after a disastrous 2009?
There were a couple of blowouts on opening weekend as Kansas City crushed DC United 4-0 with two goals on each side of halftime and Real Salt Lake smashed San Jose 3-0 behind a pair of goals from Javier Morales.
Elsewhere, the Columbus Crew won 2-0 at home against Toronto FC as Schelotto was on the scoresheet. Rivals FC Dallas and Houston Dynamo played out a 1-1 draw at Pizza Hut Park as Atiba Harris scored for Dallas. Finally the LA Galaxy welcomed Landon Donovan home from Everton and defeated New England 1-0 on a 6th minute goal from Edson Buddle.

FC Dallas was just minutes away from grabbing the full three points against the LA Galaxy at The Home Depot Center. They just could not close the deal though as Pat Noonan scored in stoppage time to salvage the tie.
