The determination of final places for the 2009 MLS playoffs came down to the final weekend of the season and a wild weekend it was. Real Salt Lake and New England claimed the final two spots, but not without plenty of drama.
FC Dallas were sitting pretty on Saturday evening. Leading in Seattle at the half and only needing to hold on to claim a playoff berth. Instead they cracked and gave up a pair of second half goals losing 2-1 and missing out.
DC United needed a win in Kansas City. They held a 2-1 lead into the final minutes before surrendering a penalty kick in the 92nd minute and tying 2-2. DC United had to waait until Sunday and hope for a New England loss. Instead New England stepped up and won 1-0 at Columbus on a Jeff Larentowicz with only ten minutes to play. The win moved New England over DC United and into the MLS playoffs.
Real Salt Lake took care of business winning at home 3-0 over Colorado and then sat back and watched most everyone else slipup and allow them to grab the final spot. The MLS playoffs begin next week with Columbus as the top seed and the Los Angeles Galaxy the two seed.
