The semifinal pairings are set for the 2008 US Open Cup as quarterfinal matches were played Tuesday night. USL side Charleston Battery continues their impressive run as they crushed FC Dallas at Pizza Hut Park 3-1. Aside from an injury time goal from Kenny Copper it was all Charleston as they claimed their second MLS scalp of the tournament. Last round they knocked out the Houston Dynamo.
Elsewhere, the New England Revolution survived a scare from Crystal Palace USA of Baltimore advancing in penalty kicks. The match saw a first half goal from each side. On the night Crystal Palace survived a 26 shot barrage from the Revolution , but were able to survive into penalties where New England netted all five of their penalties.
Another USL side was also succesful in the quarterfinal match as the Seattle Sounders took out Kansas City also in penalty kicks. The home side Sounders came out on the front foot and produced several quality chances in the first halfd but were unable to beat the Wizard defense. Neither side were able to score on the night and the match went to kicks. It took seven rounds, but for the second year in a row, the Sounders reached the Open Cup semifinals at the expense of two MLS opponents, and this time a date with another USL First Division side, the Charleston Battery, is all that stands between them and the final.
In the last game of the quarterfinal round, DC United rallied for a 2-1 win over the Chicago Fire. Chicago had grabbed an early lead on a goal from Daniel Woolard and it was looking good until DC United introduced Jaime Moreno to the match. Moreno entered and and transformed his side's fortunes with a composed display of passing and playmaking to create two goals and pace United to a comeback .
