The 2009 mens college soccer season kicked off Tuesday evening with some marquee matchups as well as some very interesting results. Many teams started the season with a flurry as they play a daunting early season schedule. Tuesday night saw some NCAA Tourney previews as well as some head scratching upsets.
The Marquee Matchups -
Several juicy games dotted Tuesdays schedule. New Mexico put on a very impressive display as they travelled to #21 St Louis and won handily 3-0 outshooting the hosts 15-9 on the night.
#10 Notre Dame went on the road and totally destroyed Michigan 5-0 behind a hat trick from Bright Dike.
UC Irvine won an entertaning match with Santa Clara 3-2 in double overtime. Santa Clara blew a 2-0 lead in the match and Amani Walker's header gave UC Irvine the win in the 105th minute.
The Quality Games -
Cincinnati travelled to rivals Dayton and put on a wonderful display winning 5-2. Brenden Stelmak had a pair of goals and Nick Weightman had a goal and 3 assists in the win.
Drake got off to a good start to the season with a 2-0 win at home over Big East foe Depaul.
Upsets -
Lehigh knocked off Stanford 2-1 rallying from a halftime deficit to win.
Gardner Webb travelled to Clemson winning 1-0.
Adelphia held Georgetown to a 0-0 draw.
No Trouble for the Big Boys -
North Carolina had no trouble taking care of UNC Asheville 5-0.
San Francisco easily defeated Summit League favorites UMKC 4-1.
Wake Forest was held scoreless until the 73rd minute when Zach Schilawksi scored for a 1-0 win over William & Mary.
Tulsa defeated Missouri State 2-0.
Duke defeated James Madison 2-0.
